Common Dreams Interpreted: The Sexy Sex Dream

One dream that is experienced by almost everyone, in multiple scenarios, with multiple characters (sometimes at the same time), and across the lifespan is the Sex Dream. This very common dream can carry with it many emotions upon waking; arousal, embarrassment, confusion, and a host of others, but what does it really mean?

An accurate interpretation of the Sex Dream will depend a lot on what’s going on in the waking life of the person, just like any other dream. A sex dream can be a way to simply expand your sexual experiences in a safe environment. Perhaps there is something that you have thought about, fantasized about, or are missing from your current relationship but you aren’t brave enough to bring it up in your waking life, the Sex Dream can be your mind’s answer to your problem. You get to “experience” whatever it is that you are longing for in a completely safe and nonthreatening way.

Does that mean that if you dream about having sex with someone you have that desire in your waking life? Not necessarily. Sex can be a symbol for many different emotions or experiences. For instance, it can symbolize success, self esteem, confidence, and other positive emotions. It can represent power and the struggle that you are having in your waking life for it. If you have a boss, for instance, that you feel is beneath your abilities and is still higher on the food chain than you, dreaming that you are having sex with them, especially if you are in the dominant position, is probably about your desire for power over them and not indicative of sexual attraction for them.

Your sex dreams can involve people, places, things, or situations that would be abhorrent or even illegal in your waking life. Dreaming about having sex with a family member; for instance, is very common but absolutely does not indicate your sexual attraction to them. In this case sex is probably representing something else. For example, if as an adult you have a dream in which you have loving, tender sex with your sibling who you are not as close to in your waking like as you used to be, this probably symbolizes you missing that intimacy which has nothing to do with sex.

If you have a Sex Dream that leaves you feeling “icky” remind yourself that it is probably a symbol of something else. If you have a Sex Dream that leaves you feeling sated and happy, good for you.

Common Dreams Interpreted: Death

Death is a word that evokes so many different emotions, thoughts, and responses the world over. Whether you have a fear of death, look at it as a natural part of life, or even welcome it depends greatly on your culture, your age, your community, and your own life experiences. When one has the very common dream about death, their emotional response to the dream runs the gamut of emotions as well. Out of all of the Dream Interpretation requests I receive, Death plays a part in around 1/3 of them.

The person whose death is depicted can be a friend, loved one, a stranger, or oneself. For the purpose of the most common Death related dreams we will not venture in this blog post about people who are killed by you in your dreams as that is a completely different symbol.

The main thing to know about dreams involving Death is that it is almost always a symbol of the approaching end to something, not a literal harbinger of bodily Death. That’s almost always the top fear of people that write for a dream interpretation regarding Death; that they have foreseen their own Death or that of someone they love.

In fact; death in your dreams almost always signifies the end of a stage in your life, a relationship, or some event. It could also symbolize a feeling of insecurity, fear, or loss that you are experiencing surrounding someone or something in your waking life.

For instance, a reader (who has given permission for her dream to be shared) wrote in regarding a dream in which her Grandmother, who had passed away several years earlier, died and she, as a child, felt an intense sense of loss. After corresponding with her to get some additional details of both the dream and her waking life, my interpretation of that dream was that she was anxious and mourning the loss of her own motherhood role as her son had graduated high school and was preparing to go off to college. For this particular reader, her Grandmother had taken the place of her biological mother very early on in her life.

As you can see, to get an accurate dream interpretation you have to look at the themes in your dreams as symbols for what is going on in your life, not as literal representations.

Common Dreams Interpreted: The Naked Dream

I am standing at a podium addressing an audience, I’m nervous, my hands are a little shaky, and I worry that my breath will get caught up and I won’t be able to speak. Then I start my comments and I’m feeling a little better, as I go along a feeling of confidence washes over me and I stand up straighter my voice ringing out louder. I’m relaxed and at ease, I lean forward and take the microphone from the stand so that I can walk around a bit, engage my audience more. As I step away from the protective shelter of the podium a wave of nausea washes over me, I am completely naked. Everyone sees, they are pointing, laughing, and gasping as I rush back behind the podium. I can feel tears stinging my eyes and my face flush. Thankfully I am dreaming and I wake up still feeling a little embarrassed but thankful that it’s over.

What does dreaming of being naked in public mean? It’s a very common dream shared by people across all spectrums of life. The venue may be different, maybe you dream of going to school naked, giving a presentation naked, shopping naked. The one thing that most of these dreams have in common is the feeling of humiliation and public exposure. I think that this is a very literal representation of our inner fears. For instance, I do a lot of public speaking and no matter how many times I address an audience I always experience a feeling of intense fear right before I go on, just like in my dream.

When I am naked in my dream I am extremely vulnerable, I am open for ridicule. This can be indicative of a situation in our waking lives in which we feel intensely uncomfortable, anxious, and vulnerable. Maybe it’s moving to a new town and starting over with new neighbors, new coworkers, new friends. Maybe it’s a promotion that requires new duties that you aren’t completely sure of. Or it could be anxiety over a relationship that is getting deeper and more intimate, exposing new vulnerabilities.

When you dream the “naked dream” pay close attention to your audience, there is almost always one. See if there’s any correlation to something in your waking life. This will help you identify the area of your life in which you are having negative feelings and address them.

Common Dreams Interpreted: Back to School

You thought that your school days were far behind you but in the land of your dreams they are alive and well. Dreams of being back in high school are very common and can mean different things. Of course, high school was the place and time when we carved out our identities for the world and for ourselves so it is not surprising that our brains take us back there.

Dreaming about being back in school can also have to do with your work life. If you stop and think about it, your job can be a lot like school was. You go there every morning, spend the day with your “friends” and being productive (hopefully). There can be cliques, office drama often mirrors those high school days, and your work is still being “graded” albeit a little differently.

Many times when people dream of being back in school there are elements of their lives today involved. I dreamed last week that I married to my husband, had our children, but spent my days in my old high school. There wasn’t even a disconnect in my dream between my home life of now and my high school days. The great part about this dream for me was I also looked like I did in high school.

If your dreams focus on negative experiences that you had in high school it may indicate that you are feeling insecure or experiencing difficulty in your life today that involves an area of your life from school. For instance, if you were overweight and teased about it in school and you are still overweight today and for whatever reason are increasingly agitated or insecure about it, this can be reflected in your dreams.

Common Dreams Interpreted: Partner's Infidelity

One of the most common dreams is also one of the most unsettling; it is your spouse or significant other cheating on you. Before we get any farther please know that this almost never indicates any actual indiscretion on your significant other’s part. So breathe a little easier and let me explain some common interpretations of the cheating dream.

Although actual cheating is not usually the case this dream can signify that you feel your partner is spending too much time away from you or involved in other pursuits. He or she could be working more, spending more time with friends, or just playing video games.

Dreaming of your husband or wife cheating could also be an indicator that for whatever reason, you are feeling a little unsteady in your relationship. Because your dreams tend to mirror your subconscious thoughts; this common dream of infidelity can pop up when your relationship has started to become stagnant or if you have been arguing more. It is a reflection of one of our deeply rooted fears, our significant other cheating.

Of course, if there are other signs in your relationship that there may be actual cheating occurring, it is something that you need to address with your partner; however, when doing so bring up the concrete “real world” issues and leave out your dreams. This will keep the conversation focused on facts and not on the feelings that these dreams can invoke.

It is also good to look at how often these dreams disturb you, if they are a regular occurrence it is more likely due to a real issue in your relationship as opposed to the rare dream of your spouse’s infidelity. If you have a history of cheating in your relationship you may be more prone to these dreams and they can cause a greater degree of distress as they may bring up actual feelings and memories that you have had to deal with.

As I always advise, if your dreams are causing you actual distress in your waking life, discuss them with your partner. Just be very careful with these particular dreams that you don’t accuse them of something based on your sleep thoughts.

Common Dreams Interpreted: Being Chased

I wanted to follow up my falling dream interpretation guide with being chased because they are very similar. I know this puts me at risk of sounding like I am repeating myself but many people often experience both dreams in the same period of their lives. I hope that anyone who is having both types of dreams can benefit from having these together.

Being chased in a dream is a very common experience that almost everyone I have talked with has experienced at some point. There are two common dream interpretations that go along with these dreams that I personally put faith into.

Being chased in a dream is most often a manifestation of fears, insecurities, or personal trauma that the dreamer is avoiding. By not facing their issues they are causing a buildup of stress and anxiety that is quite literally chasing them.

I can say from experience that these dreams are terrifying and often times the dreamer will awaken fatigued and out of breath. I have personally had these dreams several times and have almost always found relief by reflecting on what issues I have been avoiding. If anyone knows me I am a major avoider so it’s no surprise I have had these dreams myself.

Often by acknowledging the issues and taking steps to address them these dreams will clear up quite quickly. Occasionally these dreams persist or an issue isn’t obvious. One piece of advice I have both received and given when self reflection doesn’t help is to sit down and write out the dream with a successful resolution at the end.

Another theory is that dreams about being chased, especially when being chased by a large animal or monster, is that these are some form of ancestral memory or survival mechanism. The theory holds that these dreams are a genetic holdover from our ancestors who lived with the very real danger of being chased and eaten.

I’m not sure if ancestral memories really exist or if they do come out in our dreams but the theory seems plausible. I would be very interested in knowing what my readers think of this. Common Dreams Interpreted: Falling

Falling Dreams

One of the most common types of dreams that we are asked about, perhaps second only to dreams about teeth, are dreams about falling. Falling is a primal fear that is common to everyone, and shares some standard meanings so it is understandable that so many people have these dreams. Luckily since it is such a common dream finding dream interpretations is a simple matter.

Very often dreams about falling happen right after falling asleep and will normally startle the dreamer awake. These are very common, especially when you are stressed or overly tired. If they continue or become frequent you may want to speak with your medical care provider as they may be able to provide relief.

It is also common to experience small muscle twitches in conjunction with these dreams. These small twitches are called Myoclonic seizures and are perfectly normal. These twitches do serve to intensify the sensation of falling and will make the dream that much more realistic and startling.

There are several commonly accepted interpretations for dreams about falling. Falling is both literally and figuratively about losing control or losing your footing on a situation. When you’re falling you have nothing to hold onto and no support. Most commonly dreams about falling center around those types of emotions.

This most commonly happens when you are feeling like you have lost, or are quickly losing control over a situation. The dreams also tend to happen if you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed out either at work, home, or in a relationship.

One common trigger that we seem to run into repeatedly is when the dreamer says that she was feeling secure until some event literally took her feet out from under her. It seems like in our experience sudden and unexpected losses of employment or relationships is a common theme in those who come to us for help.

If you are having these dreams I always recommend that you take a step back and strongly evaluate how secure and happy you are with your current life situation. Sometimes we are too close to our own lives to properly evaluate so having someone impartial who can tell you the truth helps. Finding the areas of your life that are out of control and working to bring them back into harmony will not only resolve the dreams, but also help out your overall well being.

Teeth Dreams

In the years that I have been researching and analyzing dreams I have found that the most common dreams involve teeth. Most commonly dreams about teeth involve them either falling out, rotting, or crumbling with the dreamer powerless to stop it. These dreams are understandably very troubling and will often leave the dreamer shaken for some time after waking.

Teeth are often seen as a symbol of power and aggression. So to dream that you are losing your teeth can be a sign that you are feeling powerless over something in your life. These dreams are very common when dealing with an unwanted change.

Teeth are also a symbol of physical attractiveness, youth, and good health. Dreaming that your teeth are rotting or falling out could be caused by anxiety over how others perceive you or about your health. They could also be a reflection of waking fears over embarrassment or performing in social situations.

The last common interpretation for these dreams is a more literal interpretation of teeth as they relate to communication. Many who have these dreams have reported that the dreams were caused by anxiety over keeping secrets or guilt for telling lies or spreading rumors.
