One of the most helpful tools in dream interpretations is the Dream Diary. This is like a journal that you will write down your dreams, in the fullest detail possible. The Dream Diary works best if you keep it by your bed with a pencil so that you can jot down your dreams immediately upon waking. This is especially important when first starting out, as you journal your dreams regularly you will find yourself better able to remember your dreams better and longer.
When completing your Dream Diary remember to not only write what happened in your dream but who was there, what did you feel while dreaming and upon awaking, were there any people, places, or things that were similar to your waking life? If so, were they identical or were they somewhat different? How were they different? For example, if your dream took place in your living room did it look the same as it does when you are awake? Perhaps the furniture was arranged differently, or the colors were not the same.
It is also important to record events in your Dream Diary in the correct order. If you had multiple dreams sort of strung together, make sure you mention that. Although you may not immediately see the connection, a dream interpreter can often assist in finding them.
One key point in keeping a Dream Diary is that you cannot depend on your memory so it is very important to write everything in great detail. When you are fully awake hours later, that dream that seemed so vivid is usually hard to recollect.
You can choose to focus on certain dreams in your Dream Diary if you’d like. For instance, if you have nightmares you may choose to journal only about those, especially if you are attempting any type of self therapy utilizing your Dream Diary. While this approach is valid, I find that it really is better to collect more information. There may be clues and symbols in your other dreams that shed light on your nightmares.
Take some time each day to review your Dream Diary and reflect back upon what your mind is trying to tell you. You may very well be able to identify patterns in your dreams that can assist you in your waking life.
