In my previous post on Dream Journals “Dream Journals - An Introduction” I wrote about the benefits of keeping a dream journal. Despite the many benefits in interpreting dream meanings, most who start a dream journal will abandon them after a short time. While even a few weeks will have long lasting benefits; to truly get the most out of dream journals they should be maintained for a much longer time. Personally I have almost a year of dreams and their meanings in my dream journal, and it has been invaluable for me. So here are 5 quick and easy tips to help you keep your dream journal.

#1 - Invest in your Dream Journal
Experts agree that one of the best ways to ensure that you stick to something is to make a personal sacrifice and investment into the project. This applies just as much to keeping a dream journal as it does to anything else. If your just using some loose notebook paper your much more likely to abandon the project. While no one is saying you need to invest a large sum of money on a fancy journal, if you invest some time and energy into the journal you are much more likely to stick with it.

#2 - Place the Dream Journal beside your bed
The best time to write in your dream journal is right after waking up, but before you have come fully awake. This period is the best time to remember your dreams from the night before. Once you have woken up and started moving around you will find that your dreams fade away quickly. For this reason it is best to keep your journal handy so that you can wake up and record your dreams without having to move about too much.

#3 - Wake up Early
I know it sounds horrible, as most of us are so worn out from everyday stress that every second of sleep is precious. However waking even 5 minutes earlier than normal can greatly improve dream recollection. This is because your sleep pattern is such that you will be waking up directly from a dream. Doing this can improve your odds of correctly remember the dream, which will improve your chances at getting accurate dream meanings.

#4 - Involve the Family
This may not apply to everyone but for those of us with spouses, children, or roommates of any kind it is important to involve them. At the very least let them know what is going on and that you need 10 minutes every morning to reflect and write. From experience I can tell you that it is very difficult to do this with hungry children crawling into your bed.

#5 - Keep it Fun
While dream journals are important tools to deciphering dream meanings don’t get overly concerned about them. Keeping the process fun and informal will help you in the long run in keeping them going. If you miss a morning, or if the dog jumps on the bed and wakes you up before you have time to write, it’s ok. The important thing is that you keep going and eventually you will find that writing will be as natural as putting on your socks in the morning. But keep it fun and light and don’t let keeping the dream journal control your mornings.
